Obesity is the most common cause of many health disorders. It is no wonder that cancer tumors occur due to obesity as well. According to the WHO data, oncologists diagnose cancer in about fifty percent of obese patients every year. The worst indices are shown in the USA, where overweight women are at risk group of cancer.
In 2012, the World Health Organization collected the data, showing that the high body mass index is the main factor provoking malignant tumors. About 3.6% of patients (480 people) have had cancer due to overweight. This information was published in The Lancet Oncology Journal by the WHO.
The connection between high BMI and likelihood of cancer tumors was revealed according to the global data on cancer patients, collected from 184 countries of the world. So, the numbers speak for themselves.
If you want to calculate your body mass index, all you need to do is divide your weight number by your height (meters) squared (or use online BMI calculator in pounds and inches). If the result is 25 and more, then you are overweight, sorry. If the BMI is 30 and above – it is obesity.
Surprisingly, the better the life conditions in economically developed countries, the higher the number of cancer patients, suffering from obesity. According the Director of the International Agency for Research of Cancer (IARC), Dr. Christopher P. Wild, as long as economy develops, the number of obese patients with cancer will be increasing steadily. This statement means that people from developed countries should keep their bodies in a good shape in the first place.
The researchers claim that we need to do our best to fight against excess weight, since it is one of the main causes of cancer these days. Given the fact that more and more people become overweight annually, the number of oncological patients will be increasing every year. For instance, during the last 35 years, the number of obese people has doubled (women are at number one risk group because they visit oncologists twice more often than men do). And that is huge.
According to doctors, the highest quantity of oncological patients, suffering from overweight is in the North America. For comparison: the USA – 111 thousand of people; Europe – 65 thousand; China – 50 thousand (in 2012).
