Antiobesity drugs contraindications

Drugs included in one pharmacological group have almost the identical contraindications. Therefore, the presence of contraindications to the use of a weight loss drug, automatically limits the use other similar drugs.

Weight loss drugs included in the group of sympathomimetic amines have the similar contraindications. These drugs are as follows: Mazindol, Diethylpropion, Benzphetamine, Phendimetrazine, Methamphetamine и Phentermine.

All the listed drugs are contraindicated in patients with:

• Glaucoma
• Severe hypertension
• Pulmonary hypertension
• History of cardiovascular disease
• History of mental illness
• History of drug or alcohol abuse

Moreover, none of weight loss drugs included in the group of sympathomimetic amines should be taken:

• During pregnancy
• When using MAO inhibitors
• In hypersensitivity to sympathomimetic amines

Some of the listed weight loss drugs should not be taken in patients with: advanced atherosclerosis, hyperthyroidism, peptic ulcer disease, arrhythmia, and renal or hepatic insufficiency.

In case of contraindications to the use of sympathomimetic amines, an obese patient can be prescribed with drugs included in other pharmacological groups (lipase inhibitor, serotonin 2C receptor agonist, serotonin–norepinephrine–dopamine reuptake inhibitor).

If you want to use sympathomimetic amine for the obesity treatment, discuss with your doctor its advantages and potential risks to your health. If sympathomimetic amines are contraindicated to you, use safer over-the-counter diet pills for weight loss.
